SIGLA role
SIGLA has acquired all the data on the land and underwater (LiDAR, ortho-photo & Bathymetry) and processed it to provide a comprehensive 3D data model for the studies and designs that are required for the purpose of the project. It has been executed in less than 6 months.
A bit of History
The Canal del Dique is a 115-kilometer waterway in Colombia that connects the Magdalena River to the Caribbean Sea. Originally built in the 16th century for navigation, it has since become a major environmental and socioeconomic challenge.
The Problem
Over centuries, the canal has undergone significant degradation. Sediments from the Magdalena River have accumulated, causing the canal to widen and deepen, leading to:
- Flooding: Frequent and devastating floods affecting coastal communities.
- Ecosystem degradation: Loss of biodiversity and destruction of mangrove forests.
- Economic impact: Negative consequences for agriculture, fishing, and tourism.
The purpose of the project
To address these issues, the Colombian government has launched a massive restoration project called Ecosistemas del Dique. This initiative aims to:
- Restore the ecosystem: Reforest mangrove forests, protect wetlands, and improve water quality.
- Reduce flood risk: Implement measures to control water levels and protect coastal communities.
- Enhance economic opportunities: Promote sustainable development, such as aquaculture and ecotourism.
The project involves a combination of engineering works, environmental restoration, and community development. By addressing the root causes of the problem, it seeks to create a sustainable future for the region.
